Oh my goodness, you guys!!! Are you ready for another FUN quilting adventure??? Because Moda Blockheads is BACK, and I am SEW excited!!!

Moda Blockheads 7: Friends & Neighbors has officially begun, and I couldn’t be more excited to be participating alongside so many incredibly talented Moda designers!

If you’ve participated in Moda Blockheads before, you already know how much fun this quilt along can be. And if you’re brand new, WELCOME!!! You’re in for such a treat! This year’s theme is Friends & Neighbors, which I absolutely LOVE! What better way to celebrate our love of quilting than by bringing together beautiful quilt blocks, talented designers, and our wonderful quilting community?

And did I mention that the weekly block patterns are completely FREE??? Let’s get into all the fun details AND take a look at what I’m doing with my Blockheads quilt this year!

What Is Moda Blockheads 7?

Moda Blockheads is a FREE quilt along hosted by Moda Fabrics featuring quilt blocks designed by some of your favorite Moda fabric designers. Each week, a different designer shares a brand new quilt block pattern for you to download and make. This year we have 30 designers, 30 blocks, and 30 weeks of quilting FUN! You’ll find a little bit of everything throughout the quilt along, and one of my favorite things about Blockheads is seeing how all of the different designers’ styles come together.

But here’s what I love even more…

You can make it completely your own!

Choose your favorite fabrics. Change up the colors. Make every block or only make your favorites. Follow Moda’s layout, follow along with my layout, or come up with something completely different! There really are SO many possibilities!

Now Let’s Talk About MY Quilt!!!

Okay… THIS is the part I’ve been so excited to share!!!

Moda has designed a beautiful Friends & Neighbors quilt setting, but you can also get creative and come up with your own layout! A few of the participating designers are sharing optional layouts too…

Including ME!!!

You know I couldn’t resist putting my own spin on it!

I’m calling my version…

Our Quilty Neighborhood 💗

Please note: This finishing pattern will be available in just a few weeks! Until then, you can sign up to receive an email as soon as it’s ready for you.

Click the button below to sign up, and I’ll let you know as soon as the finishing pattern is available!

My Our Quilty Neighborhood quilt will finish at approximately 79” x 90” and will use 25 of the Blockheads designs, all made at 12” finished. Its simple and sweet, but oh SEW cute!

But I couldn’t JUST put 25 blocks together and call it done, could I??? Hahaha!

One of my favorite parts of my setting is the adorable house and heart row running through the quilt (You will get to see more of that in the coming weeks as the house block is weekly block and I don't want to spoil it yet for you). I’m taking a portion of one of the Blockheads blocks and using it to create this fun little neighborhood right in the middle of the quilt. It fits the Friends & Neighbors theme SO perfectly, and I absolutely LOVE how it breaks up all of the blocks and makes the setting feel a little more like me!

Making My Version? Here’s What You Need to Know!

Want to make Our Quilty Neighborhood along with me? YAY!!!

Here’s a quick rundown of how I’m approaching the quilt:

My quilt finishes at approximately 79” x 90” and uses 25 of the 30 Blockheads designs, all made at 12” finished. But I’m actually going to make ALL 30 BLOCKS! Each Wednesday, I’ll be posting my version of the newly released block right here on the blog. Once we get to the end, I’ll choose my favorite 25 blocks to include in my finished quilt!

Which ones will make the cut??? We’ll have to wait and see!

For my quilt, I’m using Moda Chambray Light Blue 12051 16 for the background (this is pretty hard to find right now, but if you use a Bella Solid blue color or another blue texture print it will look great too) and Bella Solid White 9900 200 somewhere in every single block.

For everything else… I’m shopping my scrap bin!!!

I’m pulling lots of bright and cheerful colors from my own fabric collections, focusing mostly on tonals and blenders. So if you have a scrap bin overflowing with pretty little pieces you’ve been saving, THIS is the time to dig into it!

My Fabric Plan

I really want this quilt to have a fun, scrappy feel while still looking cohesive.

The Moda Chambray Light Blue will be used throughout the quilt as my background, giving all of those bright colors something pretty and consistent to sit against. I’m also challenging myself to use Bella Solid White 9900 200 somewhere in every block. Sometimes that might mean quite a bit of white. Other times it might just be a tiny little pop! That little bit of white repeated throughout the quilt will help tie all of these different blocks and colors together. For the rest, I’m pulling from my own fabric collections and choosing bright, cheerful colors that lean more toward tonals and blenders. Pinks, yellows, greens, peaches, blues… all the happy colors!!! And because I’m using scraps, I’m not worrying about making every block match perfectly.I want this quilt to feel collected, happy, colorful, and FUN!

I’m Changing Up a Few Blocks Too!

Now, you know me…

Sometimes I just can’t leave things alone! Hahaha! I’ll be recoloring every single block to work with my fabric palette, but I may also change up a few of the blocks along the way to better suit my style or the overall look of my quilt. When I do make a change, I’ll tell you exactly what I changed in that week’s blog post. If my version requires different sizes or pieces, I’ll also provide the measurements and cutting instructions you’ll need to make my changes. However, I will not be reproducing the weekly block written instructions to reflect the modifications. You’ll still need to download the FREE original Moda Blockheads pattern for that week’s block and use it alongside my changes. That way, we can have fun putting our own spin on these blocks while still supporting and celebrating the designer who created the original pattern!

Come Back Every Wednesday!

If you want to make Our Quilty Neighborhood with me, make sure you come back to the blog every Wednesday!

I’ll be sharing:

My finished block

My fabric and color placement

Any changes I made to the original design

Additional cutting measurements when needed

Other fun things about the block

You can follow my fabric placement exactly, use my version as inspiration, or completely do your own thing!

That’s one of the things I LOVE about quilting. We can all start with the exact same block and end up with something completely different!

Week 1: Spring Walk

We’re officially off!!! Our very first Moda Blockheads 7 block is here, and I had so much fun putting my own spin on this one!

Block 1 is Spring Walk, designed by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique.

For my version, I pulled from my scrap bin and used my Moda Chambray Light Blue 12051 16 as the background. I paired it with two sweet pink prints, a little pop of green, and Bella Solid White 9900 200.

Light pink print: from Pastel Prairie

Dark pink print: from Handmade Sweetness

Green print: from Cottage Charm

And you guys… I LOVE this color combination!!!

The pink flowers are so sweet against that soft blue, and I love the little pop of green in the corners. The white gives the block that fresh, crisp look I was hoping for and starts the little touch of white that you’ll see repeated in every block throughout my quilt. I also love the mix of the pretty floral units with the simple striped sections. There’s a lot happening in this block, but using the same blue background throughout really helps pull everything together. This is exactly what I envisioned for Our Quilty Neighborhood: bright, happy, scrappy, and a little different from block to block while still feeling like everything belongs together!

Want to Make My Spring Walk?

If you love my version, use the photo above as a guide for your fabric and color placement. You can follow my colors, pull similar colors from your own scrap bin, or make it completely your own!

For Week 1, I did not make any changes to the construction of Vanessa’s original Spring Walk block, so you can follow the Moda pattern exactly using my fabric placement as inspiration.

And that’s it! Block 1 is DONE!!!

One block down and 29 to go!

Now the real question is…

Will Spring Walk be one of the 25 blocks that makes it into my finished Our Quilty Neighborhood quilt??? 💗

Of course!!! See where I am putting the Spring Walk block in my quilt:

What About the Other Five Blocks?

Remember, I’m making all 30 blocks even though only 25 will make it into Our Quilty Neighborhood.

So what are we going to do with the extras???

MAKE MORE CUTE THINGS, of course!!!

I’m already dreaming up some smaller project ideas using the Blockheads designs. Think… Pillows! Table runners! Wall hangings! Mini quilts! And who knows what else I’ll come up with along the way! I’ll share those ideas here on the blog too, so even if a block doesn’t make it into my final quilt, we’ll find something FUN to do with it!

My Our Quilty Neighborhood Finishing Pattern

My finishing pattern will give you everything you need to take your Moda Blockheads and turn them into my 79” x 96” Our Quilty Neighborhood quilt. The finishing pattern will include the information you’ll need for the quilt layout, sashing, cornerstones, house and heart row, heart sashings, borders, and final quilt assembly. The individual Blockheads patterns will not be included in my finishing pattern. Those patterns will come directly from Moda as FREE weekly downloads.

Think of my pattern as the finishing instructions that bring all of those individual Moda blocks together into Our Quilty Neighborhood!

Want My Finishing Pattern?

Could you suggest a moda solid blue color that is similar to the chambray? I am unable to find the chambray available online. Thank you
