Moda Blockheads 7 | Week 2: Twinkle by Amarilys Henderson + See My Week 2 Block!

Happy Blockheads Wednesday, quilty friends!!!

We are officially on WEEK 2 of Moda Blockheads 7, and oh my goodness, this week’s block is SO STINKING CUTE!!! I am having so much fun with this quilt along already, and I just love seeing all the beautiful blocks everyone is making!

This week’s block is called Twinkle, designed by the talented Amarilys Henderson of Watercolordevo!

And let me tell you, this block is just darling!!!

Let’s Talk About This Week’s Block!

One of my favorite things about Twinkle is how quickly this block came together! This week’s block does include a little bit of Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP), but don’t let that scare you!

Never tried FPP before? Don’t worry! This is actually a great block to start with. I simply printed the templates on my home printer using regular 20 lb copy paper and set my stitch length to 1.5 or less. The shorter stitch length perforates the paper a little more, making it much easier to tear away when you’re finished. There are also tons of great FPP tutorials on YouTube if you need a little extra help getting started!

For my version, I used the same soft chambray blue that I’m using throughout my Blockheads quilt for the star, along with a sweet little white center. I surrounded it with some of my favorite pastel prints in pink, yellow, green, and light blue. I LOVE how all of these colors play together!!!

I did make a few modifications to my block to bring a little more white into the design and help balance that white center. The original block does not come this way, so I’ve included my measurements below if you’d like to make yours like mine!

The Fabrics I Used

Chambray Blue: Chambray Light Blue, 12051 16

White: Bella Solid Off White, 9900 200

Light Blue: Dainty Meadow

Green: Sunbonnet

Pink: Pastel Prairie

Yellow: This one is extra special! It was a strike off from Cottage Charm that never made it into the final collection.

I also love that this block has a little bit of everything going on. You have that beautiful star in the center, the patchwork surrounding it, and all those sweet little pops of color. It’s such a fun combination!

And, of course, I had to sneak in my signature pop of white! 💕

Block Modifications

Instead of cutting (4) Fabric E rectangles, I cut (4) white 2½” squares and (4) yellow 2½” squares.

But there are SO many fun things you could do with this block. I’ve included a few more ideas below to get those creative juices flowing! Have fun with it, make it your own, or follow the original pattern exactly. It’s totally up to you!

If you wanted to change it up even more you can have 4 patches in your corners:

Instead of cutting (4) Fabric D rectangles and (4) Fabric E rectangles, you could cut (8) white 2½” squares, (4) yellow 2½” squares, and (4) pink 2½” squares for a different look.

Or, you can simplify the block even more:

Instead of cutting (4) Fabric D rectangles and (4) Fabric E rectangles, you could cut (2) yellow 4½” squares, and (2) pink 4½” squares for a simple look.

My Blockheads 7 Quilt

If you missed my Week 1 blog post, I’m doing something a little different with my Blockheads quilt this year!

I’m creating a special setting called Our Quilty Neighborhood, and I cannot WAIT to share it with you!!!

I’ll be making all of my blocks at 12” finished, with the exception of one block from Week 5 that I’ll be modifying from the 18” version and making 4 times.

I’m also using a beautiful light blue chambray background throughout my quilt, with little pops of white in every block. And the best part? I’m pulling fabrics from my scrap stash, including prints from several of my Moda fabric collections and maybe a few that never made it into a collection!

I just love the idea of bringing all these different fabrics together into one special quilt.

I’ll be making all 30 blocks throughout the quilt along, but I’ll only be using 25 of my favorites in my final setting. The extras will be perfect for pillows, table runners, or other little projects!

Here is where my Week 2 Block will go in my quilt setting:
