This year, we’re heading back to Granny’s for a 4th of July celebration—and you’re invited! 🇺🇸💕
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, we’re kicking things off with a fun and festive quilt along: 4th of July at Granny’s!
This QAL begins on Monday, April 20th, and we’re leaning all the way into the theme with stars, stars, and more stars! ✨ You’ll be creating 7 different star block designs, all coming together in a beautiful granny square–inspired layout (hence the name Granny!).
If you’ve joined one of my previous Granny QALs, then you already know just how much fun these are. And if this is your first time—oh, you’re in for a treat! This year we’re changing things up just a bit… but I promise it’s going to be just as fun—if not even better!

Here’s How It Works
Each week, you’ll receive a brand-new star block pattern with all the details you need for that week. You’ll make 4–8 blocks per week, each finishing at 6”, so you’ll see progress quickly and stay motivated.
Don’t worry—these blocks are designed to be fun and approachable, so you can piece them together fairly quickly. Some blocks will feature print backgrounds, while others will use low-volume or background fabrics to really let your stars shine.
And because it wouldn’t be a true Granny experience without a little extra fun… each week you’ll also receive a festive 4th of July recipe to get you even more excited for the holiday! 🎉
All patterns, recipes, and bonus goodies will be available to download in the 4th of July at Granny’s Main Hub for those enrolled in the QAL.

Let’s Talk About the Quilt, Blocks & Final Layout
Quilt Details
Finished Size: 68” x 68”
Skill Level: Confident Beginner
Techniques Used: Flying Geese, Square-in-a-Square, HSTs, and an accurate ¼” seam
Piecing Method: Traditional piecing (no appliqué or FPP)
The quilt is set on point in the final layout, but don’t worry—it’s much easier than it looks! The pattern will guide you step-by-step, making the process simple and enjoyable.
The design features a large granny square layout, beautifully framed with a border and star blocks in each corner—such a fun and classic finishing touch!
For the best results, I recommend using two main print colors (red and blue) paired with a coordinating background fabric.
Quilt Blocks
Block Size: 6” finished star blocks
Each week you’ll create a different star block design, all finishing at the same size for a cohesive look.
Blocks will be rotated on point in the final layout, giving the quilt that signature granny square feel.
A diagram will be provided each week to show exactly which colorway to use for your blocks.

Quilt Layout
Here’s how the quilt comes together:
The outer band of blocks is recommended to use a variety (or a single print) of red fabrics for the star backgrounds.
The middle band features low-volume or white backgrounds with printed stars.
The inner band uses a variety of blue fabrics for the backgrounds.
Of course, you are more than welcome to change the colors to match your style! Just keep in mind that the patterns will reference these color placements, so you may need to adapt your fabric choices accordingly when following the cutting instructions.
Fabric Requirements
For this quilt, you will need:
5 yards background
2¼ yards red
1 yard blue
¾ yard blue (for border)
⅔ yard binding
4.5 yards backing

My Fabric Plan
I have been saving up my reds, whites, and blues for the perfect quilt—and this is it!!!
I’ll be using several deep red prints from past Minick & Simpson fabric lines. For the blues, I’m using all of the medium blue tones from Camille Roskelley’s Blueprint collection.
While the exact reds I’m using may be harder to find, any red prints will look beautiful paired with the Blueprint fabrics. The Blueprint collection is still fairly new and should be easy to find—I’ve linked it below!
For this quilt, you can get two background blocks and the star pieces for a low-volume block from just one fat quarter, making this a great project for using a variety of prints!
To really make the granny square layout pop, I recommend grouping your fabrics by week:
Use the same or similar print backgrounds for Weeks 1–3
Use coordinating prints for Weeks 4–5
Use another set for Weeks 6–7
For Weeks 4 & 5, you can mix things up a bit by using different low-volume backgrounds and different prints for the stars.
Here’s what I’ll be using:
Weeks 1–3: I’ll be using four different red print backgrounds. The stars will all be made using a white-on-white (SKU #55337-21).
Weeks 4–5: I’ll be using a low-volume background (SKU #55337-11) and alternating red and blue prints for the stars.
Weeks 6–7: I’ll be using six different blue print backgrounds, with the stars again made from the same white-on-white (SKU #55337-21).

I recommend purchasing a little extra fabric just in case you make a mistake or decide to switch things up along the way!
You are absolutely welcome to customize your colors. If you’d prefer to swap the reds and blues—or even use completely different colors—you can! Just keep in mind that the patterns will follow the color layout shown in my version, so you may need to adjust accordingly. Don’t worry though—coloring sheets will be provided to help you plan your layout.
You could even go all blues, all reds, or any color palette you love if you don’t want a traditional red, white, and blue quilt.
If you’d prefer to keep things simple and use fewer fabrics, you can absolutely follow the original fabric requirements listed above instead.

After your purchase, you’ll receive an order confirmation email that includes a download. When you download the file, you’ll see a welcome page for the QAL with instructions to access the Main Hub. You can either scan the QR code or type the link into your browser. Be sure to enter the password provided to access the hub.
Once inside the Main Hub, you’ll need to fill out the QAL Email Communications form. This step is important—it adds you to the QAL email list so you’ll be notified each week when new blocks are released and when the next part of the QAL begins.
Inside the Main Hub, you’ll find sections for your weekly blocks, recipes, and more. No content will be available just yet—everything will be added weekly starting April 20th.

Military veterans are very near and dear to my heart. My dad proudly served over 20 years in the U.S. Navy, and my husband is medically retired from the Navy as well after serving 6 years. Frequently Asked Questions
Does the bundle come with fabric?
No, the bundle only comes with the QAL pattern bundle and any extra goodies I might throw in during the QAL. This dos not come with fabric!
Do I need to keep up each week?
Nope! While it’s fun to sew along each week with everyone, you can go at your own pace. All content will remain available in the Main Hub, so you can catch up anytime.
How long will I have access to the QAL?
You’ll have long-term access to the Main Hub and all the downloads. However, I always recommend downloading your patterns and content to your own device just to be safe.
Is this beginner friendly?
This QAL is best suited for a confident beginner. You should be comfortable with basic piecing and have experience with techniques like HSTs, flying geese, and sewing an accurate ¼” seam.
What kind of piecing is used?
This quilt is made using traditional piecing only—no appliqué, FPP (foundation paper piecing), or special tools required!
Can I use my own fabric?
Absolutely! You can use your stash, your favorite fabric collection, or follow along with my fabric suggestions. Just be sure to follow the color placement diagram for the best results.
Do I have to use red, white, and blue?
Not at all! While the quilt is designed with a patriotic theme, you can use any color palette you love—scrappy, seasonal, or totally custom.
