Moda Blockheads 7 | Week 3: Game Day by Sherri McConnell + See My Week 3 Block!

Happy Blockheads Wednesday, quilty friends!!!

We are officially on WEEK 3 of Moda Blockheads 7, and I have another adorable block to share with you today!

This week’s block is called Game Day, designed by the wonderful Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life!

And you guys… I LOVE how this one turned out!!!

There is just something about this block that feels so classic and sweet. And once I added my soft pastel fabrics, that chambray blue, and of course my little pops of white, it fit right in with the rest of my Blockheads quilt!

Three blocks in and I am already loving how this quilt is coming together!!!

Let’s Talk About This Week’s Block!

Game Day was such a fun block to make!

One of the things I love most about this block is how many opportunities there are to play with color and fabric placement. It has a really fun geometric design, but depending on the fabrics you choose, you can make different parts of the block stand out.

For my version, I stayed with the same soft Chambray Light Blue that I’m using throughout my Blockheads quilt. I love how it creates a consistent background from block to block while still letting all of those sweet little prints shine! And, of course, I had to add my signature little pop of white! 💕 I used the white around for the star points, and I LOVE what it did to the block. It almost creates a little frame around the center! Then I pulled in pink, yellow, green, and light blue prints for the other pieces of the block. I think those soft colors look so pretty against the chambray.

This one just makes me HAPPY!!!

The Fabrics I Used

Chambray Blue: Chambray Light Blue, 12051 16

White: Bella Solid Off White, 9900 200

Light Blue: Dainty Meadow

Green: Sunbonnet

Pink: Pastel Prairie

Yellow: This one is extra special! It was a strike off from Cottage Charm that never made it into the final collection.

One of my favorite parts about making my Blockheads quilt this year is getting to dig through fabrics from my different Moda collections and mix them all together. Some are newer, some are older, and a few might even be prints or colors that never made it into a final collection!

I think that is going to make this quilt feel extra special when it’s finished.

Make Game Day Your Own!

This is another block where I think you can have SO much fun playing around with your fabric placement! I didn't make any changes to this weeks block other than the color placement.

You could make the four corner squares all the same fabric for a more traditional, symmetrical look. Or do what I did and use several different prints to give it that sweet scrappy feel. You could also make that center section really pop by using a contrasting fabric, or keep it soft and subtle by using colors that blend into your background. And don’t be afraid to move colors around from what you see in the original pattern! That is one of my favorite things about Blockheads. We are all making the same block, but once everyone starts choosing their own fabrics and changing up the placement, they can look completely different!

Make it yours!!!

My Blockheads 7 Quilt

If you’re just joining me, I’m creating my own special setting for Moda Blockheads 7 called Our Quilty Neighborhood, and I am getting SO excited to share it with you! I’ll be making all of my Blockheads at 12” finished, with the exception of one upcoming block that I’ll be modifying from the 18” version and making four times. Throughout the quilt, I’m using Chambray Light Blue as my background and adding a little pop of Bella Solid Off White somewhere in every block. Then I’m pulling lots of happy scraps from my different fabric collections for the rest! I’ll be making all 30 Blockheads blocks as they release, but I’ll only be using 25 of my favorites in my final Our Quilty Neighborhood setting. And don’t worry about those extra blocks! I already have ideas for turning them into pillows, table runners, and other cute little projects!

Here is where my Week 3 Game Day block will go in my quilt:

I cannot WAIT to start seeing all of these blocks together!!!

Now I want to see YOUR Game Day blocks!!!

Are you sticking with the original fabric placement, or are you changing yours up a little bit like I did?

I absolutely LOVE seeing how everyone takes the same block and makes it completely their own. That is one of the most fun parts of Blockheads! Be sure to share your blocks in the Moda Blockheads Facebook community so we can all see what you’re making!

That’s it for Week 3, quilty friends!

Three blocks down!!! And I have to say… seeing these soft, scrappy blocks start to come together is making me even more excited about Our Quilty Neighborhood.

I’ll see you next Wednesday for Week 4!

Happy Quilting! 💕
