A Beginner-Friendly Scrappy Quilt Project
It’s time for another FREE quilt along, and I couldn’t be more excited! Are you ready??
This summer, we’re diving into our fabric stashes, pulling out those favorite scraps, and making a quilt that celebrates one of my all-time favorite quilt blocks—the classic Log Cabin. Welcome to the Summer in the Cabin QAL!
Whether you're a longtime quilter or brand new to a quilt along, this beginner-friendly quilt project is designed to be fun, stress-free, and perfect for summer sewing. If you've been looking for a scrappy quilt to use up your stash or a summer quilt project to sew alongside a quilting community, you're in the right place!
What is the Summer in the Cabin QAL?
The Summer in the Cabin QAL is a FREE 7-week quilt along hosted by My Sew Quilty Life.
Beginning July 6, 2026, we’ll sew together one step at a time as we create beautiful 7” finished Log Cabin blocks. Rather than making an entire block each week, we’ll build our blocks gradually by adding sections each week. This makes the process easy to follow, allows for lots of chain piecing, and helps everyone stay on track.
By the end of Week 4, you’ll have all of your blocks completed and be ready to assemble your quilt top using your favorite layout.
Why You’ll Love This Summer Quilt Along
✨ FREE to join
🧵 Scrap-busting fun
📧 Weekly email instructions
🎨 Four different quilt layout options
👯 A fun quilting community
🎁 Prizes and giveaways
❤️ Beginner-friendly
One of my favorite things about this quilt along is that everyone can make their quilt their own. Use your scraps, a favorite fabric collection, or pull fabrics from your stash—the choice is yours!
Schedule:
The quilt along officially starts on July 6th, but you’ll have plenty of time to get prepared before then!
Start pulling your fabrics and getting everything organized now. On June 29th, you’ll receive a cutting guide with all the pieces you’ll need to cut for your blocks.
If you prefer to cut everything at once, you’ll save time each week when we begin assembling our blocks. If you’d rather cut your fabrics week by week, that works too! There’s no right or wrong way to participate—work at the pace and in the style that works best for you.
See the full schedule below:

Four Layout Options

The same Log Cabin block can create so many different looks, which is why this QAL includes four unique layout options.
Love a traditional Log Cabin quilt? We’ve got that.
Prefer stars, pinwheels, or secondary designs? We’ve got those too!
All four layouts use the same 64 blocks, so you can even change your mind along the way if another layout catches your eye.
The only layout that requires additional blocks is the Star Layout, which uses some all low-volume (or background) Log Cabin blocks.
If you’re considering the Star Layout but aren’t quite sure yet, I suggest making at least 52 Log Cabin blocks using both your print and low-volume (or background) fabrics. Then, if you decide to make the Star Layout, you’ll only need to make the remaining all low-volume Log Cabin blocks. If you decide on one of the other layouts instead, simply continue making 12 more mixed Log Cabin blocks to complete your quilt.
This approach gives you the flexibility to change layouts later without having to remake any blocks.
See the 4 different layouts below:

*For this layout if you wanted to make all the same log cabin blocks with no all low volume blocks you could make each star have a corner. That will work too.

A True Scrap Buster - Fabric Requirements
If you’ve been looking for a reason to use those fabric scraps you’ve been saving, this is it!
The Summer in the Cabin QAL was designed with scrappy quilts in mind. Mix your favorite fabrics, combine collections, or use every little leftover piece you’ve been holding onto “just in case.”
There are no rules—just have fun and make it your own.
See the graphics above for each layout for the fabric requirements.
What I’m Making
For my quilt, I’m planning to use fabrics from all of my fabric collections mixed together for a truly scrappy look. I’ll be pairing them with lots of low-volume prints and backgrounds.
Right now I’m torn between Layout 1 and Layout 2, but I have a little time to decide!
